A new world of experiences and emotions is depicted through the creative lens of Yuhng Haze in his new EP titled Lavender Town.

Lavender Town is a project that displays themes of happiness and fun on the outside but there are also topics of sadness discussed in every song as well. Lavender town is a location in the world of Pokémon that is a graveyard and this intrigued me because not many people actually realize this as a kid. When playing the game, everything seems so happy when looking at things from a surface level but this dark theme is also present in the game too.

The first track on the project titled “New Cardigan” starts with the nostalgic sound of the Pokémon selection chime. The song has a very infectious hook and quotable lines in the verse such as, “ just because you like my posts doesn’t mean we keep in touch”. This is a very strong start to the EP and does a great job of setting the tone for the rest of the songs to come.

The next track titled “Candy Dreams'', the lead single from this EP, fits very well in the context with the other songs from the project. The song evokes an image and expressive emotion from the descriptive lyrics in the hook. Lyrics such as, “cotton candy bright yellow” and “love me like your favorite sweater” are memorable lines that stick and paint a specific picture of an experience and convey a feeling.

Track number three titled “4am” is a very dreamy track that really portrays the feeling of what an early 4am morning would sound like. The main theme of sadness behind this outward appearance of happiness is most notably referenced in a line from this song that says, “I flooded out my wrist, but the tears keep rolling down”.

The last track on this EP titled “Tipsy” is a very fun track that is a shining moment putting Haze’s creativity and versatility on full display. The track has an attention grabbing deep vocal right in the beginning layer with energetic shouting adlibs that complement this deep vocal very well. The refrain in the song includes pitched up vocals that repeat the word “talk” emulating the sound of the ticking of a clock, and with the deep voice in the background vocal sounding like a person waking up, it plays very nicely into the theme of being tipsy.

This project overall shows immense growth in the artistry of Yuhng Haze and is a clear indicator that he is developing his skills of paying a great amount of attention to the fine details of the work he is putting out.
