Fearofmakimgout has once again found a way to stand apart from the rest with this new attention grabbing project interestingly titled “Secret Third Thing”. Even from first listening to this band’s music, I had always been fond of the way that they have been able to capture emotion through the blend of vocals and live instrumentation, which they have in many of their songs. This is the third body of work coming from Arizona based group Fearofmakingout, and this seven track project includes the three singles they have previously released leading up to this EP. There is always an unexpected element in all of their songs and each song delivers unique moments that make this project extremely diverse all the way through.
Some highlights from the project include the intro track which does a great job at setting the tone and is appropriately titled “Starters”, because it definitely gives me the same vibe as the sunrise at the start of a new day. I really like the switch up that happens around the beginning of the song and again towards the end of the song in which they bring in these plucky key sounds and a simple drum pattern. Another highlight for me was the song “floor 20” and the urgent tone which it delivers. There is a great vocal performance from the feature, Nyzahir, which compliments the instrumental very well, and it is cool to see that he actually has writing credits on two other songs off this same project. Finally the song “Tucson”, which is my personal favorite from the selection of new songs, is a great way to round off the project and the song name seems to originate from the city in Arizona which shares the same name. This song presents a very strong vocal performance and a powerful drum pattern that is consistent throughout the majority song.
One of many take-aways that I got from listening to the entirety of this project is that fearofmaking does such an amazing job on the production end of their music. They let their live instrumentation and other added production do a lot of the talking on their tracks, which allows for so much creativity and range throughout their songs. I definitely recommend that you give this project a listen and also dive into the other songs from their discography while you are at it!
